ARNOLD MENDELSSOHN (1855-1933): String Quartets in D, Op. 67 and in B Flat, Op. 83.

Description: Now that we have something other than choral music to judge this nephew twice removed of Felix Mendelssohn by, and it turns out that, far from being a conservative upholder of Mendelssohn's and Schumann's styles, Arnold was quite up-to-date. These two quartets, written back-to-back in 1916 and 1917-18, use the fully mature chromaticism of Reger and Wolf and you might throw Richard Strauss in as a comparandum as well. Call it late Romanticism at the doorstep of Expressionism (but not across the threshold yet). Reinhold Quartet.
