PETER MAXWELL DAVIES (b.1934): Piano Concerto, Worldes Blis.
Catalogue Number: 02O071
Description: The latest disc of Maxwell Davies reissues contains the 1997 concerto, a 36-minute work which manages to make telling use of dissonance, romanticism and constant development throughout its three movements with piano writing of dazzling density (this was written for the strengths of the soloist here) and veers from periods of sharp-edged activity to slow, brooding atmospheres. The earlier Worldes Blis (1966-69) is the most expansive of the composer's pre-symphony orchestral works. Based on a 13th-century plainchant, its 42 minutes contain much more iconoclastic, not to say avant-garde, music than his later style, blending its early music source with a 20th century European expressionism but also employing developmental procedures of the Classical era. Kathryn Stott (piano), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Peter Maxwell Davies. Original 1993 and 1998 Collins Classics releases.
