JAMES WHITBOURN (b.1963): Annelies.
Catalogue Number: 02O080
Description: This is an eloquent and beautiful work, setting extracts from Anne Frank's famous diary chosen by Melanie Challenger to highlight the insightful observation and mature empathy of the doomed girl. There are dramatic and turbulent sections to accompany the dairy's accounts of terrifying events, but the work's overall tone is less about the tragedy of Anne Frank's fate or the horrific episode of history that caused it than providing an apt setting for the poignant, penetrating commentary of a bright, thoughtful young person. The vocabulary is tonal and deliberately in a very accessible style, with melodic shapes sometimes inflected by those of Jewish melodies. Texts included. Arianna Zukermann (soprano), Westminster Williamson Voices, The Lincoln Trio, Bharat Chandra (clarinet); James Jordan (conductor).
