JOHANN CHRISTOPH VOGEL (1756-1788): La Toison d'or.
Catalogue Number: 02P042
Reference: GCD 921628
Description: Vogel was considered by some contemporaries as the most promising young opera composer of his time but he only produced two before dying of, as they used to say, "dissipation". A passionate Gluck enthusiast, he modeled this Golden Fleece tale on that master (and received praise from him too) but, by the time it was premiered - 1786 - Gluck was gone from Paris and the Sacchini faction was in charge. Be startled by Vogel's wild orchestral accompaniments to Medea's many raging arias which prefigure early Romanticism. 2 CDs. French-English libretto. Marie Kalinine (mezzo), Jean-Sébastien Bou (baritone), Judith Van Wanfoij, Jennifer Borghi, Hrachuhi Bassenz (sopranos), Nuremberg State Theatre Chorus, Le Concert Spirituel; Hervé Niquet.
