Description: Born in Biarritz, on the Atlantic coast of France near the Spanish (Basque) border and domiciled in Nice from 1926-36 when most of these pieces were written, Journeau studied under Max d’Ollone and Nadia Boulanger but went his own way, completely unencumbered (unresponsive to?) the roiling musical currents of his young maturity. The biggest piece here, the 24-minute piano trio from 1924, was praised by both d’Ollone and Paul Le Flem - which tells you how late 19th century it is. These are all very conservative pieces, marked by flowing melody and suggestions of the rhythms of the sea (although not Impressionistic - Romanticism rules the day) with an intimate, sometimes melancholy atmosphere. Conservative collectors need not hesitate! Ensemble Opus 41.
