Description: Borup-Jørgensen returned repeatedly to the viola, especially in the earlier part of his career, apparently drawn to its capacity for dark-hued expressiveness. The sonata, Partita and duo all date from the early 1950s, and all are relatively conventional, as opposed to the composer's later more experimental approach to timbre and rhythm. The sonata is in three movements, in a mid-century, tonal idiom; effectively expressive in its incisive outer movements and lyrically melancholy slow movement. The slightly earlier duo is even more traditional, but its rhythmic instability and brooding introspection point toward the composer's mature voice; the Partita, only one opus number later, is already more abstract and harmonically astringent. Mobiles (1961) emulates Calder's sculptures with a degree of freedom in co-ordination between parts, which gently and sonorously interact and move around each other, and the aphoristic, enigmatic Rilke setting of 1977 is texturally inventive in its interplay between two equal voices. German-English text. Anette Slatto (viola), Christina Bjørkøe (piano), Mathias Reumert (marimba, conductor), Ekkozone.
