Description: You’ll know the Ireland and Delius pieces already so it’s easy to say that everything else here fits on a program with them even if Scott’s two Sonnets (1914/15) are as difficult to characterize as most of his compositions. Of the other first recordings, Orr’s pair are harmonically subtle character pieces and Young’s 1931 Passacaglia neo-baroque in inspiration. The longest newcomer is Pitfield’s 1939 sonata (15 min. in four movements) which has a touch of bright and spiky neo-classicisim to its first three movements. But Carwithen’s, in only its second recording, though written probably around 1951, will be the most satisfying to lovers of English music of the pre-World War II period. Fenella Humphreys (violin), Nathan Williamson (piano).
