Description: An attractive recital of approachable works, all thoroughly based in tonality. The Husa and Feld were composed in the same decade as the Martinu, and will appeal to anyone who admires the more famous work. The three-movement Feld in particular, neo-romantic and expressive, with drama and melodic memorability is a most satisfying find, here receiving its first recording. The first movement explores a lovely, melancholy theme in episodes ranging from wistful to stormy; the second passes a beautiful melody and its accompaniment back and forth between the instruments, rises to a climax and subsides again, while the finale is an energetic perpetuum mobile. The single-movement Kalabis, in three clearly defined sections, although composed about a half-century later is also very tonal, with suggestions of folk influences and passages strongly reminiscent of Janacek. Kristina Fialová (viola), Igor Ardašev (piano).
