Description: Payne's quartet, written for this ensemble in 2015, is a taut, single-movement structure with an arresting, declamatory opening gesture that recurs throughout, but as the germ of various kinds of development, never literally recapitulated. This continuous development of ideas in various interchanges between the instruments is the key to the piece, which journeys far from the world of its beginning by the time its enigmatic, otherworldly ending is reached. The idiom is very tonal, and rhythmic alacrity is important throughout. Primrose Piano Quartet w/Ronald Woodley (clarinet), Daniel Roberts (violin).
