Description: Powerful, opulent and dramatic, this breathes the charged air of Bax’s early symphonic poems and of Debussy’s La Mer; “Shadows” even anticipates horror-film scores decades in the future in its depiction of a wild night alone in a frightening landscape. Quite early indeed in the 17-minute Ballade of c.1915 and Martinu comes very close to Rachmaninov’s own Böcklin The Isle of the Dead in his evocation of the forlorn, somber and sinister atmosphere of “Villa by the Sea”. Dream comes from 1920 - not a first recording because a very hard-to-find Panton LP took care of that - and is a pure wallow in gorgeous Impressionism. And the notes hint that there’s still more to come! Sinfonia Varsovia; Ian Hobson.
