Description: Before French orchestral repertoire collectors begin shrieking too violently, let me point out that at least the Duruflé (did anyone out there know these pieces existed?) is the longest work on the disc: 21:15. Here’s the note for the 1932 Danses: “In 1932 Duruflé had clearly been studying the works of Ravel and of his teacher Dukas, and the Trois Danses are unmistakeably in the same class. His mastery of the orchestra and his abundance of fresh ideas are clear in all three movements: ‘Divertissement’ is too mild a title for the substantial first dance; the ‘Danse lente’ exhibits all the instruments at their best, from the simple octaves on the harp at the beginning and the characteristic dialogue for wind instruments that follows, to two great sweeping climaxes with strings and brass in full cry; and the ‘Tambourin’ is both witty and exhilarating, named after the long Provençal drum which sets the pulse”. Sinfonia of London; John Wilson.
