Description: A welcome opportunity to sample the orchestral output of this unique English composer, who stands far enough from the mainstream to be exotic and endlessly fascinating, yet close enough to it to appeal immediately to admirers of tonal British music from Elgar to Brian. Foulds' trademark modally-inflected idiom and winning combination of ambitious seriousness of content and ready accessibility almost suggesting 'light' music (in which he was also a noted craftsman, of course) is well in evidence here, especially in the splendid Mantras, three strongly contrasting and evocative mood pictures. The scintillating orchestral version of April-England is a real show-stopper too. London Philharmonic Orchestra; Barry Wordsworth.
