Description: The first encapsulates his reverence for his mentor in absentia, Busoni; a masterly transcription of themes and episodes from Doktor Faust. The second is Stevenson's finest essay in 'World Music', long before the term, or the genre, became fashionable. Stevenson once described himself as 'a putter"-in, not a leaver-out', and here he puts just about everything in; Eastern European dances, Scottish dances and Pibroch, Gershwin, evocations of Manhattan's skyscrapers, the inevitable DSCH motif and, again, Busoni's Doktor Faust. The result is nothing short of exhilarating. Murray McLachlan (piano), Chetham's Symphony Orchestra; Julian Clayton. Original 1993 Olympia release.
