CARL FRIEDRICH ABEL (1723-1787): The Drexel Manuscript (complete).
Catalogue Number: 03K028
Reference: GCD 920410
Description: Complete except for a six-bar bit which looks like a note for an improvisation, this 79-minute release offers all 28 pieces in this manuscript which originated in Thomas Gainsborough's collection (he played the gamba too, and painted two portraits of Abel). A Hyperion release from October 2007 (10J032) contained only 20 of these remarkable pieces which use an instrument already fading into history yet inhabiting the galant and early Classical style of the period when they were written - Abel's years in London (1759-82). Paolo Pandolfo (viola da gamba).
