Description: Garrett is an extremely prolific composer (about 500 works to date) from an eclectic background (composition studies with Rubbra and Alfred Nieman, piano with Frank Merrick; work in the fields of jazz and film). These works showcase the lyrical, tonal aspects of his wide-ranging output. The excerpts from the various sets of preludes that the composer has produced over the years are very romantic in feeling, with Scottish rhythms and melodies, some jazzy and bluesy harmonies, and references to 19th and early 20th-century piano traditions. The two very recent Preludes are very brief and succinct, chromatic but still preserving the same tonal idiom as the earlier sets, pared down to essentials. The Book of Circe consists of 100 pieces, and is a kind of open notebook of the composer's absorption of styles. This selection consists of his take on the baroque suite, incorporating 19th-century Grand Piano manner and 20th-century harmony and rhythmic flexibility. Barbara Karaskiewicz (piano).
