Description: Some of this incidental music was offered on a BIS disc 14 years ago (03-002) but the Ouverture Héroique, written in Dresden in 1867 during a study period in Munich, a dashing piece of 13 minutes whose title tells all, and the 24-minute suite of music from the play Kalanus, about Alexander the Great's meeting with the eponymous Indian holy man, are otherwise unavailable on CD. The brilliance, color and incisiveness with which Horneman draws his pictures of stage action is up there with the best in the business of incidental music, making this new release a must-have for collectors of Danish (or any) orchestral music of this genre.
