Description: The symphony (1974-75), with its oppositions of legato polyphony in the strings and jolting staccatos and marcatos from woodwind and a particularly aggressive percussion section), takes its title from the composer's separation of his musical materials into three spheres - harmony, rhythm and dynamics - and is clothed in what at the time would have seemed a craggy, often highly dissonant nonconformity. The other main work, much more instantly approachable, is the concerto of 1985 which Panufnik turned into a lament for the Polish "Solidarity priest" Jerzy Popieluszko, whose torture and murder by the Polish secret police occurred as the composer was about to begin the work's composition. No texts. Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra (Landscape), Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra; Lukasz Borowicz.
