Description: The piano concerto (1925) is a piano-with-orchestra piece rather than a virtuoso Romantic concerto; there's a Gallic transparency and lightness of touch throughout its modest three-movement, 18-minute span while the five-movement Divertimento of the same length and only a year earlier is a straight-out attempt to revisit the works in this genre of the Classical period. The 20-minute Symphonietta keeps up the pattern; a reworking of a missing string quartet In Memoriam, it's a memorial from 1908 for Graener's eight-year-old son which is melancholy rather than completely grief-stricken and which has some echoes of Richard Strauss. The brief Swedish Dances come from 1932, using melodies from Lapland, Östergötland and Dalecarlia - again, miniatures, not in Brahms or Dvorák or Bruch style. Oliver Triendl (piano), Munich Radio Orchestra; Alun Francis.
