Description: The main work here is the violin Divertissement of 1894, a misnomer if ever there was one since this is a three-movement work of just under half an hour whose virtuoso technical demands led many star violinists to refuse to attempt it. Une Nuit (1891) makes attractive use of Ukrainian folk material in its single-movement, 17-minute span and is lighter on the soloist while La Villanelle is in the category of works like Saint-SaĆ«ns' Danse macabre, only longer (in two movements) and the nine-minuute 1900 work for saxophone is one of the earliest American pieces for that instrument. Lorraine McAslan (violin), Amy Dickson (sax), BBC Concert Orchestra; Johannes Wildner.
