Description: The main work on this 75-minute disc is the 16-song, 44-minute Volkliederspiel of 1915 which sets texts from Des Knaben Wunderhorn in three sections portraying the three stages of life and love. The catastrophe of the Great War is behind it all from the nostalgia and passion of the first two stages (with nationalistic overtones which Brentano and von Arnim's collection always had) to the gloomy and bittersweet songs about soldiers and death. Stylistically, it's also based in the last half of the 19th century. German-English texts. Sophie Wagner (soprano), Ulrike Mayer (alto), Markus Schäfter (tenor), Konrad Jarnot (bass), Reinild Mees (piano), Monteverdi Chamber Choir Würzburg; Matthias Beckert.
