Description: Lenny's 1938 sonata with its asymmetrical rhythms, syncopation, polytonality and intricate counterpoint, already looks ahead to his mature style. The brief series of Anniversaries are short pieces dedicated to friends and are heterogeneous in form and style but we offer the disc mainly for Bernstein completists who will want the seven minutes of first recordings: Non troppo presto (1937) may be Music for the Dance I (II is from 1938) and both pieces are rhythmic and sparse with harsh and brittle harmonies and lack the composer's later lyricism.
