Description: Bruch's only previously known two quartets are youthful works, the first from his student period (1856), the second from four years later. Both are in the classic four-movement form and are full of vigorous and graceful tunes with a use of tarantella rhythms which look ahead to Bruch's folk-inspired compositions of his later years. Now we have another, just discovered in 2013 in the archives of the Mozart Stiftung in Frankfurt, a four-movement piece of 27 minutes written in 1852 by the 14-year-old composer as an application for a scholarship from that coveted institution (he got it). This early on Bruch’s influences included Beethoven and Schubert in addition to Mendelssohn and Schumann. Diogenes Quartet.
