Description: The last of four settings of 18th-century Goldoni comedies, this slice of Venetian life was first produced in 1936. Set in a small outdoor courtyard, the drama (such as it is) concerns the interactions of various neighbors, several of whom are affected by the arrival of a Neapolitan aristocrat (whom they don’t realize is penniless). He speaks standard Italian; the rest of the cast Venetian dialect. You might say that Il Campiello has in common with Seinfeld that it’s “a show about nothing”. A listener at a rehearsal was supposed to have said “What peace this music brings!”. One previous CD release existed - a 1992 Trieste production on the defunct Fonit Cetra label. 2 CDs. Italian-English libretto. Diana Milan, Patrizia Cigna (sopranos), Cristina Sogmaister (mezzo), Max René Cosotti (tenor), Maurizio Leoni (baritone), Coro Li. Ve., Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta; Stefano Romani.
