Description: Unlike the spawling Romanticism of the Long March Symphony above (03R058), this is more a series of “impressions” couched in a clear, simple and fluent tonal language often not far from film music. The notes give no date and the only one that turns up online - on YouTube - is c.1980. Du attempts to describe his country’s famous wall in four categories of Chinese traditional aesthetics: Appearance, Sentiment, Spirit and Soul. Only one Chinese popular song is used (in the slow movement and, varied, in the scherzo) and the overall lack of bombast is likely to make a listener return to it more frequently than to Ding’s outsized creation. Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra; Kenneth Jean. Original 1988 Hong Kong Records release.
