Description: Premiered in 1733, Il prigionier was overshadowed by the intermezzi of the composer’s own La serva padrona. Yet Pergolesi’s adhesion to the stylistic standards and the formal customs of his time is total and his respect for the taste of the audience entirely focused on bel canto is plain in the full-scale opera which received its first-ever performance at which this recording was made.
