Description: This disc which pays tribute to composers from San Luis Potosí devotes two-thirds of its length to Gaitan who took the usual route to Europe and studied in Berlin from 1922-24 and them travelled the continent for almost three years as a pianist. The pieces here date from 1924-28 and do not stray from the German orbit between the boundary markers of Schumann and Lizst except perhaps in the delicate traceries of Spanish dances in the Cajita. The best of the rest are Carrillo’s spectral nocturne from 1928 and Baranda’s etudes (1926-29) which are more open to the new styles of music from that period. Carlos Undiano (piano).
