Description: The first release in a "Julius Roentgen Edition", this contains the same 1910 C minor symphony we offered on the Dutch label Cobra Records last August (08I001), a full-scale, four-movement work, 4 minutes longer in this broader, more "Romantic" interpretation, in which Roentgen's conservatism is firmly established: it sounds like Brahms writing the Schumann Fifth. The numbering is not Roentgen's. It appears that it's being done for this edition in simple chronological fashion. Dating from 1892, Aus Jotunheim was a wedding gift for Nina and Edvard Grieg and originally a violin/piano piece which the composer orchestrated shortly after. In five movements, lasting 25 minutes, this suite employs Norwegian folk motifs in emulation of the great Norwegian composer and succeeds remarkably well in capturing a great deal of the magic of Grieg. Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz; David Porcelijn.
