Description: Incorporating two very early pieces by icons of the garde most avant - Cage's sonata (not a sonata in the classical sense) and Wolff's Trio makes this an unexpectedly varied collection, and it will probably appeal beyond die-hard modernist collectors. Walter's Reigen with rubbed wine glasses, a mezzo soprano and a great deal of extended technique, is the most sonically extreme work here; the early Cage sounds like a young man's chromatic experimentation with tone-rows, and the Wolff trio is of remarkably simple texture. The Huber uses breath sounds, but also - the 'scintillant' aspects of the piece - fanfare-like gestures and little sotto voce fragments which are conventionally written and exploit the timbral appeal of the instrument's brilliant tone. Bornhöft's work incorporates some suggestion of repetitive gestures and a steady pulse, and also of chordal consonance. Wolff's Pulse and the late Cage One4 present the most familiar type of contemporary writing here, rounding out a nicely diverse program. Reinhold Friedrich (trumpet), Robyn Schulkowsky (percussion), Truike van der Poel (voice, glasses), Kornelia Brandkamp (flute), Jens Peter Maintz (cello). Capriccio 67 178 (Germany) 04I091 $17.98
