Description: These three genial and eminently approachable concerti, written over an almost 30-year period, have a consistent tonal style and lively, directly communicative nature. The composer has an undoubted gift for lyrical expression, evident in all the slow movements, and engaging, rhythmically propulsive finales. The eloquent slow movement of the double concerto - the unusual combination of of soloists is very effective - is especially fine. The works are all classically proportioned; the large-scale (in length and forces) cello concerto, the earliest work here is a predominantly dark-toned work, with more than a little Shostakovich about it; again, the music alternates between heartfelt lyricism and strongly rhythmic incisiveness, here with a definite tinge of irony. Excellent examples of the traditional genre in the late 20th century, all three. Rebekah Binford (violin), Ákos Takács (cello), Tamás Zempléni (horn), Pál Bokor (bassoon), Györ Philharmonic Orchestra; Mátyás Antal.
