JESÚS VILLA-ROJO (b.1940): Concierto plateresco for Oboe and Orchestra (Hansjörg Schellenberger [oboe]), Serenata, Concerto 2 (Version B) for Cello and Orchestra (Asier Polo [cello]).
Catalogue Number: 04J105
Description: The Concierto plateresco pays homage to the Spanish Renaissance through the use of a highly ornamented style analogous to architectural decoration of the period. The solo line consists of elaborately efflorescing melismata around an extended melodic line without end. The music is fundamentally modal, though atmospherically embellished with a haze of subtle discord. The earlier cello concerto is notable for its dramatic tension and instrumental virtuosity; very much a solo vehicle, with the solo part like an impassioned soliloquy underscored by the string orchestra's tense dialogue in what is essentially an accompanimental role. Conventionally structured in three movements, the concerto seems more a part of the tradition than the more recent piece. The lively and engaging Serenata avoids the drama and seriousness of the other works, referring to music of the past in three linked movements, tonal, spontaneous and dynamic, with a more harmonically ambiguous slow central section.
