Description: First performed in 1716 in a cathedral in Frankfurt, Telemann's setting of Brockes' famous text (one of 13 composers to do so) is a monument in the history of sacred music. Demanding the best singers and using various solo instruments (including the very new transverse flute) in concertante roles, Telemann produced an opulent orchestral sound which would have seemed to his listeners the cutting edge of the avant-garde. And the intensely emotional and powerfully affecting uses to which he puts his music are a perfect match with Brockes' lofty style and sometimes graphic imagery designed to produce the most violent of emotions in the audience. 2 CDs. German-English texts. Birgitte Chistensen, Lydia Teuscher (sopranos), Marie-Claude Chappuis (mezzo), Donát Havár, Daniel Behle (tenors), Johannes Weisser (baritone), RIAS Chamber Choir, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin; René Jacobs.
