Description: Not everyone out there would have known that Paganini wrote four CDs worth of music for violin and orchestra beyond his six famous concertos but here they are. Four are written only for the fourth string of the violin; one adds a male chorus in a quasi-Berliozian fantastical piece which closes with the reuse of his famous Rondo alla campanella; one is a short viola concerto and one doesn't even use a string instrument: the eleven-minute N.P. a Mr. Henry which was written for the French bassoonist of the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique, Antonie-Nicolas Henry. The Grand Concerto (recorded by Accardo for DG as No. 6) and the Fifth eschew the old Mompellio orchestrations for newer ones based on the latest Paganini scholarship. A true bargain-priced treasure-trove for all Paganini enthusiasts. 8 CDs for the price of 3.
