ANTON RUBINSTEIN (1829-1894): Cello Sonatas No. 1 in D, Op. 18 & No. 2 in G, Op. 39.

Description: These are early works of 1852 and 1857 and Rubinstein, never close to being a member of the Russian-first school, sounds even more Germanic than he does in his mature works, lingering in Teutonic meadows, bathing leisurely and lyrically in middle-German Romanticism (four of the seven movements in these sonatas have tempos of either andante or moderato). The moderato assai second movement of the D major sonata should be world-famous: a lilting barcarolle of surpassing beauty and memorability. But every movement here has attractive melodic content; just don't look for violent emotional soul-bareing. Jirí Bárta (cello), Hamish Milne (piano).
