Description: Hoiby's Shakespearean opera, hailed as his masterpiece, is a solidly conventional, three act specimen, containing much effective and appealing music, and unsurprisingly very fine vocal writing. The composer's idiom is characteristically resolutely tonal, eschewing all modernistic elements, while ingeniously incorporating references to earlier musical forms and structures, and lively and graphically vivid illustrative music. Librettist Mark Shulgasser trims and organizes Shakespeare's sometimes problematic narrative, and this revised version of the score produced in the years after the 1986 première further concentrates the important elements of the story. Caliban gets some of the most striking and original music in a relatively small proportion of the overall timing of the piece, placing the conflict between the higher and lower aspects of our nature firmly at the center of this version of the drama; this includes his act II aria, beautiful and tragic, a pinnacle of the work. Definitely one of the finest examples of the contemporary-traditional American opera style of recent decades. 2 CDs. Libretto included. Purchase Opera, Purchase Symphony Orchestra; Hugh Murphy.
