Description: Two works by a pioneering proponent of electronic and electroacoustic composition, previously unrecorded and unplayed. The overlapping layers of percussion sounds in Aquarellen, building up texture in the manner more of oil painting than watercolor, were recorded and multi-tracked by one player for this premiere recording; presumably multiple percussionists would be required in live performance. The work also incorporates harp, adding a distinctive timbre as part of the overall palette, and a tape part, consisting of white noise to simulate sea sounds. Musical depictions of watercolors depicting the sea in various moods, by the composer's friend Georg Sønderlund Hansen, the 21 brief sections are effectively atmospheric. The purely electronic Illustrations from 1995 sample electronic works from the composer's studio from the 1950s and 1960s, assembled with the resources of modern digital technology to create sound-pictures with a distinct foreground texture against a softer, amorphous background of layered electronic sound. The results sound like what they are - a technologically sophisticated, idealized presentation of the kind of electronic music that was considered experimental in the pre-digital age; as with the Aquarellen, the composer's emphasis on beauty is enhanced by the infinite subtlety available to the contemporary practitioner of electronic music. Gert Sørensen (percussion), Richard Krug (recitation), Helen Davies Mikkelborg (harp).
