Description: In October 2007 this label offered Andreae's piano trios; the first string quartet is from 1905 and falls stylistically in with the violin sonata below and the first piano trio - Germanic influences predominate (try the frenetically stomping peasant dance scherzo - right out of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances if they had been Swiss Dances instead). But by 1922, the war had beaten the old world out of most composers and out of this Swiss one too: 23 minutes instead of 38, the lighter hand, less prolix syntax which produce a gossamer finale, airy scherzo and lyrical, almost pastoral first movement are the result of the incorporation of French compositional ideals. Only the slow movement is intense and stands out all the more for it. Then, the late flute quartet of 1945 is airy and epigrammatic, its four movements cut to a total of 15 minutes, inhabiting some ideal world of the spirit completely divorced from the reality of post-war Europe.
