Description: Jacob might be condemned in some quarters as "the English Hindemith" but the adagio of this 1978 sonata could stand with the best of English pastoralism; the rest of the work is, well, Hindemithian. Berkeley's sonata is from 1946 and the Gallic style of this composer is present in the outer movements while its slow movement has a restless, intense quality suggestive of the mood of the time.
