Description: This disc presents the bulk of Kirchner's chamber music, aside from his splendid series of quartets (which we offered in July 2008). All the pieces share the composer's characteristic restless energy and rhythmic alertness combined with an eloquent sense of melody and rich, restlessly questing harmony. The two Trios, separated by nearly forty years, are recognisably from the same pen; both are tautly argued, with the same Schoenbergian cogency of argument and a sense of tonality near the breaking point. The duos are similarly widely separated in time, and also recognisably spring from the same fertile ├Žsthetic, with driven, active music in constantly changing meter alternating with a songful lyricism rare in late-20th century music (and no shortage of exhilarating virtuosity for both instruments, always at the service of the work's emotional content). Flutings became a kind of study for an episode in the composer's opera Lily, a warmly exotic interlude, with something of Szymanowski in the luxuriant harmony.
