Description: Chura-Churum was originally conceived for the Swingle Singers, and incorporates techniques tailored to that ensemble; solo voices amplified and employing spatial effects, and extended vocal techniques and vocalizations. This final version uses a small instrumental ensemble, including four percussionists, to illuminate the texture. The work sets a Sanskrit prayer, which appears as chanted and sung, spoken, whispered and shouted syllables, accompanied by a level of activity between meditative stillness and densely active. The Merman, by contrast, is more conventional. It was composed as music for a mime production, and alternates folk-like pastoral material with atmospheric scene-setting sonorous fragments, evocative and, one imagines, ably enhancing the stage action of the performance. Texts included.
