CATHARINUS ELLING (1858-1942): String Quartets in D & in A Minor, Piano Quartet in G Minor.
Catalogue Number: 04M011
Reference: PSC 1304
Description: Elling, a whole disc of whose songs we offered on this same label in February 2010, was extremely conservative so the fact that the works recorded here were written between 1890 and 1905 in no way prevents them from sounding like their major influences - Schumann, Mendelssohn and Schubert. The 30-minute piano quartet is the most vivid, full of Romantic struggle and drama while the D major quartet is its opposite - mostly pastoral and light-filled with a reminiscence of a halling in its finale. Collectors of Nordic Romanticism are in for a treat (and the editor responsible for tracks and timings should be flogged, but this will not spoil enjoyment of the music, of course.) The Engegård Quartet, Nils Anders Mortensen (piano).
