NIKOLAI ROSLAVETS (1880-1944): Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2, Meditation, Dances of the White Maidens, Viola Sonata.
Catalogue Number: 04M060
Description: Both sonatas and the Meditation date from 1921-22; the latter is in simple ternary form while the two sonatas combine late Romantic expressiveness, a very compact structure and the composer's new technique based on one mode (his "synthetic chord" which was similar both to Scriabin's "Prometheus chord" and to Schoenberg's 12-tone row although Roslavets does not derive a "theme" from it). Dances (1913) is an Impressionistic piece in the manner of Debussy. All but the transcription of the viola sonata were on a Chandos release in 2001 (03C013). Lachezar Kostov (cello), Viktor Valkov (piano).
