Description: Hosokawa's fluid, organic procedures, and the absence of confrontational dramaturgy characteristic of his recent music, find logical expression in the concertante works that have absorbed him in recent years. The solo instrument represents the individual, but the orchestra, rather than opposing the 'self' reflects the individual's place in the universe, and his own position in it. The result in Metamorphosis is an extended, elegant line for the solo clarinet, with some use of extended techniques, and an introspective, integrated relationship with the subtle, enfolding colors of the orchestra, the percussion contributing richness of timbre but never any suggestion of acoustic assault. In Re-Turning, Hosokawa finds perhaps his ideal solo instrument, with its available repertory of iridescent resonances blended with an undulating, impressionistic orchestral presence. Ferne Landschaft III takes its cue from the light-drenched landscapes of Turner, with their absence of solid forms, applied to images of fog-shrouded Japanese coastal landscapes, the music's ambiguous, fluid forms constantly enveloped in a glowing halo of subtle dissonance.
