Description: This 1728 Singspiel, actually as close as Telemann got to Italian opera seria, is unusual for depicting events in Persia that were less than a decade old (the title character is an Afghan chieftain who took over the Persian throne with, in the libretto, the predictable love problems with a missing daughter thrown in). The characterization is exceptionally sharp, the orchestral color all you'd expect with a pair of very difficult horn parts and, as you'd also expect, Telemann presents some stylized Persian music. 2 CDs. German-English libretto. Markus Volpert (baritone), Ulrike Hofbauer, Julie Martin du Theil, Gabriele Hierdeis (sopranos), L'Orfeo Baroque Orchestra; Michi Gaigg.
