Description: You'll know him for the two symphonies Neeme Järvi recorded for DG but Steinberg also was responsible for one of the last examples of liturgical music from the New Russian Choral School (Grechaninov, Kastalsky, etc.) which mixed Orthodox liturgical chant with late Romantic harmonies or with imitative counterpoint. Steinberg completed his Passion Week less than a month before the Soviet regime banned all sacred music performances at the end of 1923. All but one of its 16 sections are based on traditional chant and the music's late Romantic luxurience is tempered by diatonic dissonances and occasional passages of counterpoint. Old Church Slavonic (original and transliterated)-English texts. Cappella Romana; Alexander Lingas.
