Description: Brouwer’s ninth guitar concerto was written in 2002 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Francisco Tárrega, though there are only a couple of brief references to his music. The note-writer puts it best when he describes “a kind of very cinematic ultra-Romanticism” as hovering over the work as a whole and Brouwer makes use of part of a soundtrack for a 1968 Cuban film for the central slow movement. Big piece too: 34 minutes in three movements. But the real find is the 1934 Frank Martin piece which started life as a solo guitar work for Segovia, who ignored it, became a solo piano piece and then was orchestrated at Ernest Ansermet’s request. Its four movements last less than eleven minutes but are a phantasmagoria of extraordinary orchestral colors, much of it like experiencing a slightly unsettling but fascinating dream. Wow! Miguel Trápaga (guitar), Real Filharmonía de Galicia; Óliver Díaz.
