JOHANN EVANGELIST BRANDL (1760-1837): Symphonies No. 12 in E Flat, Op. 12 and No. 25 in D, Op. 25.

Description: Brandl wrote all his 25 symphonies by 1803, so these are late Classical works in the style of late Haydn and late Mozart. That said, No. 25 is much more unbuttoned than its discmate with extensive slow introductions to its outer movements (the second sounding like we’ve suddenly switched from symphony to a divertimento for winds), excursions to remote keys and some parts that sound like theatre music; No. 12 is all brocade and powdered wig but Brandl’s love for winds and brass color both symphonies.
