Description: A nicely varied program of works of real substance. Aho's piece subsequently became the first movement of his third Chamber Symphony. It suggests an icy, rather hostile landscape with its spiky dissonances, but keeps 'freezing' onto tonal chords, and finally resolves into a beautiful, static one on which it ends. Narbutaitė's work has a slow pulse in bass-register dissonances, against which ephemeral twittering and fluttering ostinato figures appear, coalesce into gauzy clusters and dissipate. Salmenhaara began his career as a formidable modernist, hence the texture-driven intersecting planes of 1963’s Elegia II. By 1995 he had long since embraced neo-tonality, so the elegiac Elegia V is quite different, moving in slow chords in an almost 'new simplicity' idiom. Rautavaara's Canto V is a gorgeous, very tonal and poetic tone poem, becoming ever more luminous as it progresses through shadows and stresses. Musica serena finds Vasks in full 'new spirituality' mode; the piece maintains a mood of solemn serenity throughout. Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra; Juha Kangas.
