Description: This attractive disc of vivacious, approachable music is the result of the efforts of The Anglo Mexican Foundation in Mexico, which for 75 years has encouraged co-operation between Mexico and the UK. Three of the pieces here were commissioned by Anglo Arts, the cultural program of the Foundation. Basulto's Variations nicely bring the two nations together; the lively, lighthearted piece is based on "Kemp’s Jig” (a round-dance published in the first edition of John Playford’s The English Dancing Master in 1651), and consists of nine variations illustrating episodes from Will Kemp's account of his dance from London to Norwich, 'Kemps nine daies wonder'. The attractive piece, tonal like everything on the disc, makes use of various Mexican dance forms to vary the very English melody. Pequeña Serenata Ranchera is a kind of Mexican Serenata in vano, a programmatic piece with a dramatic opening in Baroque style followed by the tipsy serenade and the lady's spirited response. Arturo Márquez is the composer of the ubiquitous, almost too catchy for its own good, Danzón No. 2, invariably played as an encore after any orchestral concert with even the remotest Latin connection. His immensely appealing “Masks” concerto is a similarly delightful celebration of Mexican styles and irresistible rhythms. The two outer movements refer to the consequences of political troubles, in terms touching and vigorously defiant, while the middle two celebrate the infectious styles of the traditional Son mexicano. The brief songs are colorful and characterful settings of picturesque poems by Mexican poet José Gorostiza (1901-73). Morgan Szymanski (guitar), Gabriela Dall’Olio (harp), Jamie MacDougall (tenor), Shakespeare Sinfonia; David Curtis.
