Description: The latest release for conductor-composer collectors! van Otterloo's own music here is surprisingly weighted towards the winds and brass (surprisingly since he was a cellist). The 1938 suite is a Bartókian work for students but strings play no part in the rest. The 1944 Serenade is the most emotionally freighted, with a doom-laden march (this was the year the Dutch began starving under the Nazi occupation), followed by a deliciously atmospheric nocturne worth instantly repeating, a big scherzo and a final hymne originally cut but restored for this recording. Any collector of 20th century music for "orchestral band", much less Dutch music in general, will be happy to find this repertoire. The Schubert transcription (a second bite of the cherry, this being a 1952 revision and textural lightening of a 1940 original, is a beautifully self-effacing act of homage to the older composer. The first movement is as vein-opening here as it is in the original... Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra; Micha Hamel, Thierry Fischer.
