Description: One of several discs issued in 2004 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of this quartet (the others are of standard repertoire), this release offers the "original" members (Rostislav Dubinsky and Yaroslav Alexandrov [violins], Dmitri Shebalin [viola] and Valentin Berlinsky) in mono recordings from 1959 and 1963 of Shebalin's works. The Fifth, a war piece of 1942, uses Russian, Slovak, Ukrainian, Polish and Serbian (the same one as in Tchaikovsky's March slave) themes in its five movements while the Ninth (1962) is a classically worked out piece deriving all of its music from the themes issued at the very start. The other two works are stereo recordings from 1967. Borodin Quartet.
